Legal Support

Prepare for your consultation

A simple checklist to help you get the most from an initial free consultation. It is general guidance only — Australian Privacy Network is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice.

Before the consultation

  • Write a short, plain summary of what has happened, in order.
  • Note the key dates and who was involved.
  • List the outcome you are hoping for.
  • Write down the questions you most want answered.
  • Note any deadlines you are aware of.

What to have ready (do not send yet)

  • A list of the documents you hold, described in general terms.
  • Any reference numbers, case numbers or account identifiers.
  • Names of organisations or people involved.
  • A note of anything already submitted to a regulator or authority.

During the consultation

  • Ask the lawyer how they would like documents provided securely.
  • Ask what they can and cannot help with.
  • Ask about likely next steps, timeframes and costs.
  • Take brief notes so you remember what was agreed.

Keep yourself safe

  • Do not email highly sensitive documents until the lawyer advises a secure method.
  • Share only what is needed for the initial conversation.
  • Keep your own copy of anything you provide.
